HE Members to be consulted on pay
SG recommends rejection of employer’s offer
Higher education members are being urged to reject the national pay offer from the University and Colleges Employers Association in a branch consultation due to begin in the next few weeks.
The employers’ final pay offer was to increase annual salaries by 2% or £425 (full time), whichever is higher. The joint unions’ pay claim was for an increase of 7.5% or £1,500, whichever is higher, and a minimum wage of £10 an hour.
UNISON’s higher education service group executive met in May and “was clear that the offer falls well short of its aims,” says head of education Jon Richards.
“Recent years have seen a series of below inflation pay rises that are making it increasingly difficult for higher education support staff to make ends meet. We ask the employers to think again.”
“UNISON has notified our sister unions of the decision and will see to co-ordinate with them on the campaign”
The service group executive held detailed discussion on the offer before agreeing to recommend that members reject it, pointing out that it did not meet the pay claim agreed by all unions.
This is in line with a decision taken at UNISON’s 2018 higher education conference.

But as Britain prepares to leave the EU, this election needs to be about the future of our public services and the austerity agenda that the Tory Party has unleashed upon those services for the past seven years. They have not met one target that they have set on austerity, yet blindly continue to make public services their scapegoat. They cannot and must not be given a renewed mandate for further cuts, outsourcing of services and axing our rights at work. If we don’t act now, by 2020 we simply may not have any public services left to defend.
UNISON will be working to promote an alternative vision for public services and campaigning against a so called 'hard Brexit' but we must not lose sight of what happens after Brexit. We want a country that supports the most vulnerable, adequately funds the vital services that are so desperately needed such as social care and the NHS and invests in the future through high standards of education and training for the next generations.
We need to ensure everyone who is eligible to vote is actually registered to vote and has a voice in this election. Please make sure you are registered and share information about how to register far and wide.
